Sagarmatha National Park (SNP) and IUCN Nepal organized a two-day long capacity building program titled “Training on Resources Management in SNPBZ” for local stakeholders in Namche, the headquarters of SNP. The major goal of the training was to enhance the overall capacity of local stakeholders so as to improve the effective management and governance of resources in the Sagarmatha National Park and Buffer Zone (SNPBZ).
Its specific objectives were as follows:
- Share the findings of the research studies on legal-institutional and policy framework and wildlife biodiversity conducted under the framework of the HKKH Partnership Project.
- Provide the latest management techniques of knowledge and skills which are required for the effective implementation of the Sagarmatha National Park Management and Tourism Plan (2007-12) endorsed by the Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation in 2007.
- Explain to the stakeholders the added values and benefits of being a World Heritage Site and the Ramsar site.
- Seek feedback information on the newly proposed regulation system of the area including the security arrangements and animal insurance schemes.
The training was held from 18-19 May 2009 and it was attended by 28 participants (24 men and 4 women). The participants represented SNP, Nepal Army, buffer zone, line agencies and community-based organizations. 16 participants were from the buffer zone areas. A total of 10 presentations were made by different experts representing IUCN Nepal, Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation (DNPWC), Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation, Nepal Army, SNP and other experts.
