Regional Workshop on Innovative Tools and Experiences in Mountain Ecosystem Management

31-Aug-2009

A four day regional workshop from 31st August to 3rd September 2009 shall be organized to present the methodology, tools and applications for ecosystem management developed in the framework of the HKKH Partnership Project. Experts and practitioners from Government Agencies, Academia, International Organizations and NGOs engaged in the management of mountain ecosystem or natural resources management from Nepal, India, Pakistan, Bhutan, China, Afghanistan, Burma and Bangladesh shall be participating in the workshop.

The Hindukush-Karakorum-Himalayan mountain range is the highest in the world and is home to the 14 highest peaks on earth which are all above 8000 meters including the tallest peak Mount Everest. In these high mountain regions of the world, the ecosystems are marked by fragility, complexity and diversity.

Management procedures and techniques with proper scientific knowledge and methodologies along with the substantial involvement of all the stakeholders is one of the conditions to achieve sustainable mountain ecosystem. With this on mind, the project has developed a user friendly Decision Support Toolbox (DST), designed to support the decision making process in social and ecological system management. It incorporates different system methodologies with proper participatory data from stakeholders as well as scientific data. Final version of the DST shall also be presented during the workshop.

Training on dendrochronology and installation of laboratory

15-Jan-2009

Ev-K2-CNR under the framework of HKKH Partnership Project and University of Padua are organizing a training on dendrochronology and the installation of the dendrochronological laboratory at Nepal Academy of Science and Technology. This training is part of Ev-K2-CNR's HKKH project activities related to the development and support of environmental monitoring systems. The dendrochronological laboratory will allow stakeholders to improve the monitoring of forest and climate change-related parameters in Nepal. The training is tailored to the future users of the dendrochronological laboratory - key stakeholders are members of the consortium that will operate the laboratory in the future. The training will take place between January 15th and 21st 2009 at Nepal Academy of Science and Technology. On January 21st, the last day of the training, an official certificate handover-ceremony will take place.

Workshop to present findings of Visitors’ Survey at Nepal Tourism Board

19-Dec-2008

Sagarmatha National Park due to presence of world’s highest peak has become attraction to tourists since it’s establishment as a national park in 1976. The number of tourists visiting has been steadily increasing to the park and the year 2008 had witnessed the highest number of tourists entering the area

The importance of the tourism sector has become more evident to the local residents, but much needs to be done to better understand its features, potentialities and impacts on the local livelihoods and sustainable development of the area.

In order to fill this gap, CESVI under framework of HKKH Partnership Project carried out a visitor survey in cooperation with a local institute, Mountain Spirit involving more than 5000 tourists during the seasons of autumn 2007 and spring 2008. The information are collected on visitor profiles, visited locations, their opinions about quality of services and others that would be useful for tourism marketing and management sectors.

The results will be presented by Mr. Paolo Caroli from CESVI in a halfday workshop on the 19th December 2008 at the Nepal Tourism Board hall in Kathmandu. The participant to the workshop will be the representatives from the tourism sector, national and international organizations...

Modeling Mission in Nepal

18-Oct-2008

From 18 October to 4 November 2008, a team Ev-K2-CNR modelers, together with the HKKH Partnership and stakeholders, will carry out a Modeling Mission in Nepal. During the first week, a participatory modeling program will be held in Kathmandu. The overall program includes: modeling meetings to share the mission’s aim; qualitative and quantitative modeling sections on the management of forest, wildlife, energy and solid waste, water pollution, and tourism population dynamics; quantitative modeling section on land cover dynamics, modeling specialization and the DST. All of the HKKH Partnership partners and researches will take part and collaborate in the program.

Bridging science and participation – new approaches and tools for ecosystem management: experiences from Asia and South America

09-Oct-2008

On 9 October from 11:30 to 13:00, during the IUCN World Conservation Congress, the HKKH Partnership Project will co-organize an IUCN forum workshop with the IUCN Regional office for South America. Achieving sustainable and equitable management of socio-ecosystems requires new thinking and appropriate tools. Historically, natural resource management was primarily based on principles of orthodox positivist science. This type of approach failed to take into account ecosystems’ non-linear complexities and uncertainties. In different parts of the globe, IUCN is developing new tools and approaches for capacity building that combine both science and participation. These are being applied at multi-levels from the world’s highest protected areas (Sagarmatha/ Mount Everest National Park) to the Andes and the Amazon. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss about different approaches for capacity building for ecosystem management and the real scope it can have to actually change ecosystem management at a local level.

Objectives
•    The objective of this workshop is to present best practices in ecosystems management and share lessons learned, which support effective social and sustainable ecological management (from water to biodiversity) in Asia (Hindu Kush – Karakoram - Himalaya Region) and South America (Ecuador and Bolivia).
•    To introduce integrating and innovative approaches, methodologies and new tools to enhance the capacities and effectiveness of local, national and regional stakeholders in managing socio-ecosystems.
•    To build south-south alliances between Asia and South America for knowledge sharing and crosscutting learning.

Outcomes
•    Lay the groundwork to take (the HKKH Partnership and UICN Sur, ACCD) experiences and tools to wider audiences for application, emphasizing the innovative and integrating nature of the approaches.
•    Debate about the mechanisms used to strengthen capacities of multi-level stakeholders in the two regions
•    Identify effective tools and recognize approaches that will be relevant and applicable in ecosystem management.
•    Exchange expertise from Asia and South America that introduce how to further bridge science and participatory approaches in ecosystem management.

Key messages
•    Contemporary science, such as resilience theory, and new tools are required to meet the challenges of socio-ecosystem management.
•    New approaches and tools for multi scale socio-ecosystem management are being developed by IUCN and partner organizations; currently these are being tested in Asia and South America.
•    Bridging science and participation for effective management of ecosystems is challenging, but possible: examples from practical experiences.
